HCG (human chorionic gonadotropin) explained

Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is a glycoprotein hormone produced by the placenta during pregnancy. In men it acts on the same receptor as luteinizing hormone (LH), the signal that tells the testes to make testosterone.

Pharmaceutical hCG is either purified from urine (as in Pregnyl) or made by recombinant DNA technology (choriogonadotropin alfa, sold as Ovidrel/Ovitrelle). Its strength is measured in international units (IU).
